One of the things I love about the 12 Step Programme is their use of simple yet strong quotes. The two I love the most are ‘TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE’ and ‘EASY DOES IT.
When I am coaching my clients, whether its Personal or Professional Coaching, I often think of and lean into these two quotes.
When a client comes to me for clarification, guidance and support it is so important that the client is true to themselves. In my work as a Personal & Professional coach, it is my job to ask the questions that will lead the client to clarify whatthey really want in their lives and in themselves. Throughout the coaching process I support the client to explore their values, uncover their underlying self-beliefs and gain the self-confidence they need to move forward while all the time checking in with what is true for them.
When the client is clear what it is what they want, it is so important that they believe that they can get it. Too often the mere thought of changing something in our lives can be overwhelming and it can stop us from believing in ourselves. Perhaps we’ve tried it and failed so many times before we don’t want to try again. I don’t know how many times I swore I was going to take up running (again) and/or get back to the gym (again) and each time….I went hell for leather and then crashed and burned by week 3. I don’t know how many times I swore off chocolate and sugar to pick up my favourite mars bar a half an hour after my sworn declaration. I don’t know how many times I’ve thought about writing blogs but immediately remembered all those amazing writers out there who are much better writers and I ended up not writing at all. The list of ‘how many times’ is endless.
Now I know through working with a good Coach myself that I can change what I want to change when I am true to myself in what it is I want to do and that I can do it with ease - easy does it. I don’t have to go galloping off to the gym 2-3 times a week, I can go when it feels right and when it doesn’t feel right, I can do other forms of exercise…yoga stretches, walking, even do a bit of skipping. I don’t have to quit sugar completely but I can most definitely cut down….go easy on the Mars bars, explore what makes me overdose in the first place, perhaps have one a week instead of one a day…and find another….healthier daily snack. Instead of wasting my time and energy on comparing myself to other bloggers, I can simply concentrate on my own writing and write with ease.
‘Easy does it’ doesn’t mean I am off the hook….or I can let it go. 'Easy does it’ does mean ‘do it….with ease’. People can change whatever it is they want to change in their life, their fitness…diet…job…career…relationship, etc…when they change it with ease.
For anyone who is struggling with change, with the right support, rest assured that you can change when you follow the mantras - ‘To thy own self be true’ and ‘easy does it’.
